23 Lessons Coaching Has Taught Me (Part 1)


SHOW NOTES: Episode 15


Happy New Year! It’s our first episode of 2023! On today’s episode, I am sharing 23 lessons that coaching has taught me. On this episode you will hear the first 12 and then come back next week to hear the other 11. These lessons are in no particular order but all are important. 


1. I have the power to create the life I want.


It is easy to feel like life is just happening to us and we don’t have control. But, we have the power to decide how we’re going to show up and how we react and process.


2. My thoughts create my feelings.


The thoughts that we believe create our feelings. Tune in to hear more about this and what I mean exactly. We have the power to adjust our feelings.


3. Our feelings drive every action or inaction that we make.


How I feel decides how I’m going to show up. How we feel determines how we show up whether we are taking steps towards something or away from something is driven by how we feel.


4. If I don’t like my results, I should look back to my thoughts. 


Our thoughts determine how we feel, our feelings determine how we show up, and how we show up determines the results that we’re going to get. So if you don’t like your results, look at your thoughts. 


5. Life is 50/50.


Life is neither good or bad. It’s both. There will be positive moments, and there will be negative moments. That is expected.


6. It’s okay to not be okay.


We have been taught in life that we can’t cry or that we shouldn’t feel negative emotions, but it’s truly okay to not be okay. It’s okay to feel those negative emotions. 


7. I cannot control how others show up.


A lot of times we wish we could control others. The truth is though, we can’t control how others show up. We simply can’t.


8. Stories about who I am are just that a story - not facts.


We have to remember to stick to the facts. What are you telling yourself that is a story? 


9. I have the power to walk through struggles.


If you would have told me about the things that I have went through, I would have laughed and said, there’s no way. I know now that I have the power to walk through struggles and so do you.


10. Over indulgent habits are simply coping mechanisms I learned from a young age.


This could be overeating, overspending, over-indulging, over-Netflixing… whatever that is for you. Our brains will go back to a coping mechanism that it thought would be effective. 


11. Those coping mechanisms, sometimes called buffering activities, may offer temporary positivity, but they add extra layers of suffering. 


They offer temporary positivity but long term can add an extra layer of suffering. 


12. Beating myself up never results in sustainable motivation.


Doing this never allows for sustainable motivation. There is another way. We won’t have to shame ourselves or beat ourselves up.
