The Path To Motherhood Podcast

I find these perfectionistic type thoughts coming from that frustration that this hard work isn't equaling achievement in the trying to conceive area.

Feeling the need to strive for perfection on your TTC journey

SHOW NOTES: Episode 32

Striving for perfection can have a lot of negative consequences when it comes to your trying to conceive journey. On today’s episode, I talk about how it is super common for a lot of women going through infertility and pregnancy loss to have a perfectionistic mindset and how it can impact your health and fertility journey.

Perfectionism is a tendency many of us have in different areas of our lives where we are striving for a flawless, perfect performance. We relate hard work and effort to achievement but we end up feeling frustrated when our hard work isn’t equaling achievement in our trying to conceive journey. It’s not great to be seeking perfection all the time because it can actually have a lot of downstream negative effects. It is important to acknowledge seeking perfection all the time can lead to negative effects so that when we're in that spiral of feeling like we must be perfect, we can do something about it.

There are three main areas where perfectionistic thinking tends to weave its angry fingers and cause complications. Those three areas are:

  1. Obsessively tracking and monitoring all your fertility stuff. This monitoring can be helpful so you can understand your body and your menstrual cycle but if we take it to the extreme, it can cause stress and anxiety which can really impact your health and your fertility.
  2. Perfectionistic thoughts tend to show up about yourself. You think you need to be on the perfect diet, take all the supplements, and do the perfect exercise routine but when you don’t do those things you end up feeling like you failed and it can make you feel really bad about yourself.
  3. The blame game. Our brain doesn't like unanswered questions and wants to know why something isn’t working, why we haven’t gotten pregnant, or had success. If you are in a constant stream of perfectionistic thoughts, your brain is going to be really quick to think it is your fault for things not working. Focusing all your energy and time on disappointment is not going to help your future.

I want you guys to really take these to heart and see where they are showing up right now in your journey, or where they've shown up in the past. Acknowledge some things you can do to manage these thoughts and help yourself through these perfectionistic tendencies. I love helping women work through these perfectionistic thoughts so if this is something that you're really wanting to work on and need more help with, I can help you do that. Reach out to me by sending me a message or schedule a free consultation call and we can talk about your perfectionistic tendencies and what we can do about them.
