The Path To Motherhood Podcast

Subconsciously we are expecting positive butterflies all the time, no sadness, no pain, no grief. All this does is set us up for failure.

Life is 50:50

SHOW NOTES: Episode 42

One concept that really has helped me along my infertility journey has been acknowledging that life is 50% positive and 50% negative.  Honestly, this first came to me through coaching in other areas of life. But often what happens with coaching and thought work, is that once you learn a concept in one area your eyes start to light up and you start to see it at play everywhere.

This concept was introduced to me by the brilliant Brooke Castillo of the Life Coach School and it's such an important reminder that we should be embracing both the positive and the negative of our lives to live a full authentic life.

In our society, there's often been this cultural pressure that we need to be happy all the time that we should avoid our negative emotions at all costs. We strive to live this life free of pain, free of disappointment, having no struggle, but that is unrealistic.

Often we logically understand this, we get that life can't be positive 100% of the time. But we show up and live life as if we do believe it. Subconsciously we are expecting positive butterflies all the time, no sadness, no pain, no grief. All this does is set us up for failure.

Because it denies the reality of the fact that there is a human experience. And the human experience requires pain. Requires disappointment. Requires grief.  Life is a delicate dance of joy and sorrow, of success and failure, of pleasure and pain, and accepting the fact that there is this duality is where we find true emotional resilience.

If we go through life resisting negative emotions, it actually does not make them go away, instead we intensify our painful emotions; make them linger, and make our life more negative. We create more unnecessary suffering.

Through the Infertility Lens

We often find ourselves in this wishing for positivity pattern through our infertility journeys. "If only I could get pregnant easily like her", "Why does this have to happen to me?", "There are bad parents out there, I would be a good one".

You can see how not only will you have to process the authentic pain of your journey, but also now the negative emotions that come up from these negativity spirals we often end up in. Instead, my hope is for us all to learn the skill of allowing ourselves to experience all of our emotions. This is when healing can happen. This is where we have room for positivity in our life.  I would love to hear how this episode helped you!
